Friends saw schoolgirl hit by car

Two friends of a 13-year-old girl who was thrown through the air in a horrific car accident have spoken about the incident.

Mathilda Vazille is in a coma after being struck by a car while crossing a notorious accident hotspot on Warringah Rd, Narraweena in Sydney just after 7pm last Saturday.

"She kind of went about like three or four metres up in the air and flipped and she went head first and hit a brick fence," her friend Bella Amato said. "I thought I was imagining everything and I looked at Chiara and just went like – "did this happen?"

Ms Amato said she and fellow friend Chiara Tisamo were directly behind Ms Vazille as she began to cross the road.

They said the pedestrian lights turned from green to flashing red while they were crossing the road and they both stopped but Mathilda kept on crossing.

"You just have that instinct to just keep running because she was so close to the path," Ms Tisamo explained. 

"All of a sudden just this car came out of nowhere just speeding past and it just hit her," Ms Amato added.

The car hit Ms Vazille, who was taken to hospital with severe head injuries and underwent emergency surgery before being taken in a coma to Sydney Children’s Hospital on Sunday.

The vehicle's driver was taken to hospital and underwent mandatory blood and alcohol tests.

The spot where Ms Vazille was hit is the same intersection where model Samantha Harris' fiancé hit and killed a 78-year-old grandfather and is a known accident hotspot.
