Walrus named Freya wreaks havoc on boats in Norwegian fjords

A walrus named Freya has taken to lounging among boats in the fjords of Norway, causing them to sink under her 600kg weight.

The walrus, which has been reportedly spotted in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, has become a regular at the Oslo fjord in Norway's capital, delighting locals but unwittingly waterlogging their boats.

The walrus, who began visiting the city this month, was nicknamed Freya after the Norse goddess of love, fertility, battle and death.

Residents have filmed her movements, which mostly involve lounging in the sun on boats that buckle under her weight.

Norwegian fishery authorities considered moving Freya but have ultimately decided to leave her be.

Walruses typically frequent the cooler, Arctic waters of northern Norway.

Male, adult Atlantic walruses can weigh between 1200 and 1500kg while female walruses typically weigh between 600 and 700kgs.

While Freya doesn't pose harm to residents if left alone, locals were warned walruses, with their weight, surprising speed and tusks, can be dangerous if approached or threatened.

Kayakers, boaties and onlookers have been warned to keep their distance.
