Fresh claims against NSW hospital

Shock claims that staff at a NSW hospital sticky-taped the teat from a baby's bottle to the navel of an infant with a herniated obstructed bowel have renewed calls for an investigation into staffing at the hospital.

The baby's mother anonymously shared the claims to the Nine Network, saying her son received "third world" treatment at Lismore Base Hospital in 2014.

She told the Nine's news website the staff put a bottle teat in her son's navel with "a bit of sticky tape" to try to push the mass of skin back into the stomach.

The fresh allegations come just weeks after appalling footage was released of a mentally ill woman stumbling around the Lismore hospital, covered in faeces and falling over at least 25 times before dying of a brain injury.

In response, the NSW government announced it would conduct a parliamentary inquiry into all aspects of the state's mental health system along with an independent review by a psychiatrist.

Labor has now called for the state government to conduct an independent external investigation into staffing levels at Lismore Base Hospital with opposition health spokesman Walt Secord insisting the state's Health Minister Brad Hazzard launch an "immediate" investigation.

"Enough is enough. It is time the state government admitted that there are problems at Lismore Base Hospital," Mr Secord said in a statement on Saturday.

"There are too many problems at Lismore Base Hospital and there needs to be an independent external investigation."

Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSW LHD) chief executive Wayne Jones says the hospital is unable to disclose confidential details regarding the patient's treatment and encouraged "anyone with concerns regarding their treatment" to contact the NNSW LHD consumer relations and clinical governance unit.

"Patients can also contact the Health Care Complaints Commission which independently investigates complaints regarding health practitioners and health organisations," Mr Jones said in a statement.
