Labor set to continue Freo hot streak

Voters in Fremantle are also going to the polls in what has largely become a forgotten by-election.

There is undoubtedly less political interest in the Western Australian seats, because the government is not fielding candidates.

So the seats will remain in Labor hands.

Josh Wilson is expected to return as Fremantle's MP. He has a margin of 7.5 percent.

Fremantle has been one of the safest Labor seats in Australia since 1901, with previous MPs including wartime Prime Minister John Curtin (1941-45).

Electorate Profile

Elias Solomon of the Free Trade Party won the seat's first election in 1901. Since 1934, it has been held by Labor.

Labor's Josh Wilson carried the seat in 2016 with a 2.1 swing in his favour.

The electorate contains 103,226 voters and covers 196 square kilometres.

Despite the seat's safe Labor status, candidates from the Australian Christians, Greens, Animal Justice Party, Liberal Democrats and Australian People's Party will contest the election along with an independent.

Fremantle has registered 4540 early votes.
