Four more join national redress scheme

Catholic organisations De La Salle Brothers and the Institute of Sisters of Mercy have signed up to the national redress scheme for victims of child sex abuse.

Jewish Care Victoria and the Legacy Club of Brisbane have also joined up to the federal program, with Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher welcoming the additions.

"I am pleased that institutions are taking heed of the request for them to join the redress scheme as soon as possible," Mr Fletcher said in a statement on Friday.

"I cannot over-state the urgency of giving survivors access to redress as soon as they are able."

The scheme can offer counselling, a direct response from responsible institutions and a redress payment.

It opened on July 1 but many survivors have been waiting for institutions to join before they could lodge their claims.

South Australia has also completed the final steps in joining the scheme, meaning it is now covered by all states and territories.
