Two dead, two injured after car crashes and bursts into flames

Two men stuck in a car after it crashed and burst into flames in Newcastle overnight have died.

At about 11.15pm overnight, emergency services were called when maroon Toyota Corolla crashed into a telegraph pole at the intersection of Maitland Road and Ingall Street in Mayfield.

Bystanders were able to free two men, the 24-year-old driver and his 19-year-old driver's side backseat passenger, from the car before emergency services arrived.

But two others in the car were trapped and had to be freed by firefighters.

They suffered critical burns.

All four men were taken to hospital.

Police confirmed early this afternoon that the two critically injured men, who are believed to be aged in their 20s, had died.

The 24-year-old and 19-year-old are being treated for injuries.

The driver is under guard, police said.

It's understood all four men were students in Australia, and police are now working with officials from the High Commission of Bangladesh.

Police are investigating the crash.
