Toddler and tub taken to hospital after Melbourne bathroom mishap

A Melbourne toddler was taken to hospital with part of a cast iron bath still attached to her hand after she got three fingers stuck in its drain last night.

Emergency service crews worked for more than 90 minutes to remove part of the bath from the Dandenong home before the child was taken to hospital while still stuck in part of the tub.

It took hospital staff a further two and a half hours to cut the plug hole away.

The girls’ family phoned for help about 10pm last night, after her mother unsuccessfully tried to free her by using soap and detergent.

CFA crews used cutters, pliers and spreading equipment to try to free the toddler’s three fingers.

They were able to free two of the trapped fingers, but the toddler had to be taken to hospital to free the third.

"The older design of the bath made it difficult to free her fingers," leading firefighter Ryan Vague said.

"We had to disconnect the pipes and cut a section out the bath which was then transported to the hospital with the little girl.”

All of the girls’ fingers were ultimately freed without injury.

Mr Vague said the toddler showed amazing resilience and kept her teddy bear close throughout the ordeal.
