Former Prime Minister John Howard joins campaign trail with Victorian Premier Denis Napthine

As the state election enters its final days former Prime Minister John Howard has joined Denis Napthine's campaign, his appearance nearly overshadowing the premier's visit.

Helping Dr Napthine fight a rearguard action, the Liberal party old guard joined the Napthine campaign for a much-needed lift.

The former prime minister was warmly received by shoppers at Eastland, in a love in Kevin Rudd would have been proud of.

"I think he's campaigning very well he doesn't need any advice from me," Mr Howard said.

The former PM had a few choice words on the possibility of a Labor premier.

"I will be very disappointed for the future of Victoria," he said.

Mr Howard's appearance gives prime ministerial star power to the Napthine campaign but it also highlighted who's not here - the current prime minister.
