Two people rushed to hospital after jumping from window of burning Melbourne unit

Two people have been taken to the hospital after jumping from the first-floor window of their burning Melbourne apartment.

Fire crews were called to the unit on McPherson Street in Footscray about 6.48am.

The residents, trapped by the fire, were forced to leap from the window to escape.

Ambulance Victoria treated the two people for injuries following the fall and they were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Fire crews contained the fire to the unit within 20 minutes.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said the fire had been extinguished and the damage to the unit was extensive.

The spokesperson said the fire was sparked by a lithium battery on an e-bike on charge.

Firefighters are currently checking for any fire and smoke extension to adjoining units.
