Food poisoning at Qld restaurant hits 110

A Chinese restaurant in southeast Queensland has been shut down after a mass bout of food poisoning.

More than 110 people are understood to be affected by the suspected salmonella outbreak that has led the Logan City Council to temporarily close Chin Chin Chinese Restaurant at Springwood, south of Brisbane.

The council is working with Queensland Health to investigate after patrons, some of whom remain in hospital, fell ill at the weekend.

The Metro South Public Health Unit suspects raw eggs, possibly used in deep-fried ice-cream, were the source of the outbreak.

"We are certainly quite suspicious of a deep-fried egg product and that is a risk product at the best of times when you're combining a cold food with a hot layer on top," Dr Kari Jarvinen told reporters.

"(It) becomes difficult to maintain proper temperature control and indeed to sterilise it to get rid of any organisms that might be there."

Health inspectors expect the number of people affected to increase in the next 48 hours.

A Logan council spokeswoman said the restaurant would remain closed while the investigation was being completed.
