Almost 30,000 Queenslanders have been sick with flu in the state's most severe season in years but authorities are hoping it's starting to ease.

Figures for those struck down by the disease have decreased with 4500 cases detected last week, a drop from the 4700 infected the previous week.

This year 29,996 Queenslanders were struck down by the disease, with about 75 per cent contracting the influenza A strain, which affects adults more.

Of those with the flu, 3225 have ended up in public hospitals and 353 required intensive care.

Last year 23,285 cases were recorded while in 2015, 28,059 people contracted the flu.
