Building commission warns of shonky tradespeople as flood clean-up continues
As the clean-up continues from catastrophic flooding across New South Wales, the government is warning people to be wary of unqualified people posing as tradesmen.
So far this year, Building Commission NSW has received 157 reports of allegedly unlicensed or unregistered trade work.
NSW Building Commissioner James Sherrard said it was heartening to see communities across the Central Coast, Newcastle, Hunter and Mid North Coast regions coming together after the disaster but also deeply concerning that some people chose to take advantage of vulnerable residents.

"Before engaging any tradesperson to assess damage on your property, I strongly encourage homeowners and tenants to verify their licence through the Verify NSW website," he said.
The commission also recommends getting references, clarifying what work is included in the contract, confirming if subcontractors will be used, checking for additional insurances and understanding what compensation may be available if construction delays lead to additional costs.
He urged renters to contact their landlord about repairs.
"Tenants living in properties that have sustained flood damage are entitled to urgent repairs carried out in a timely manner," Sherrard said.
"If landlords or property managers are failing to deliver appropriate help, I encourage tenants to contact NSW Fair Trading for support and advice."
