Tax time is rarely without stress, and many Australians often forget to make important deductions in a rush to get it over with.

Organisation is key to ensuring nothing is left unclaimed, financial adviser and SugarMamma.tv  founder Canna Campbell told the TODAY Show.

Ms Campbell said some of the most common things people forget to claim are tax agent fees, membership union fees that relate to your job, car expenses if you're travelling for work, mobile phone and internet use.

Those who work from home can also claim a portion of their rent or their electricity off tax.

Receipts can be in the form of electronic copies or even photographs taken on a phone, Ms Campbell said.

"You must keep these copies for up to five years," she said.

People should gather and organise important documents before sitting down to complete a tax return in order to reduce stress, Ms Campbell said.

"Preparation is key, so you need to make sure you've got your Pay As You Go statement, any interest you've earned off your bank accounts, bank fees, your private health insurance, any debts that you've got to the government such as your old HECS debt, travel expenses, anything related to work, education expenses," she said.

"Try to have them really neatly organised so it's easy to do."

To make next year's tax return a breeze, Ms Campbell recommended using the My Deductions tool in the Australian Tax Office's app.

"It actually sends the information through to your tax agent so throughout the year you can be completely across your deductions and there's no excuse to procrastinate," Ms Campbell said.
