Five-nation group to meet at UN

Global poverty will be on the agenda when foreign ministers from Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia (MIKTA) meet later this month on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly.

The MIKTA partnership, which was formed in September 2013, will be led by Australia over the next 12 months.

All five countries account for almost $6 trillion in GDP and are UN, G20 and World Trade Organisation members.

The September meeting is expected to discuss what measures will be taken to replace the millennium development goals which expire this year.

Previous meetings have dealt with countering extremism, Ebola and nuclear weapons.

Australia will host a MIKTA meeting in 2016.
