First Aust female envoy for Afghanistan

Australia is sending its first female ambassador to Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced Nicola Gordon-Smith's appointment on Monday.

Ms Gordon-Smith is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has previously been posted to Brussels.

She replaces Richard Feakes.
