Firefighters undertake action-packed rescue drill ahead of Commonwealth Games

Queensland’s Fire and Rescue Service has undergone their rigorous annual training exercise, just weeks out from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Cameras captured QFES being put their paces today inside the unseen belly of the HMAS Diamondtina in Brisbane.

The drill involved members squeezing through the confined, dimly-lit confines of the vessel to pull two "unconscious" ship workers to safety.

“It wasn’t just the confined space issues here, but the vertical rescue access as well,” Christian Currell from QFES said.

Fellow QFES worker Adam Martin said the annual training exercise was very important.

“It’s an amazing venue. It’s very close to real life, with confined spaces incidents we might be called to, like stormwater drains,” Mr Martin told 9NEWS.

The drill comes a little under a month before the 2018 Commonwealth Games kick off on April 4, where security and safety will be at an all-time high for the Gold Coast.

Thousands of spectators are expected to pour into the city for the Games, which will be held across 17 venues.
