A fire that ripped through a horticultural business north of Adelaide has been narrowly prevented from spreading to a shed containing explosive chemicals.

More than 70 firefighters fought the blaze in Waterloo Corner on Friday morning that destroyed a glasshouse, a shed and machinery.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze on Tozer road at around 4.30am.

The smoke from the blaze was so intense the CFS issued an alert to residents as it was feared toxic fumes could spread to nearby properties.

The cause of the fire, which is estimated to have caused $400,000 damage, is not believed to be suspicious.
