Footage of the destruction inside a Sydney building after it was gutted by fire shows the devastation caused by the blaze.

The fire ripped through a business in Cosgrove Road at Strathfield South overnight.

Firefighters responded to reports of a blaze at around 11.15pm and immediately set about trying to bring the fire under control.

The fire was burning in a commercial premises which firefighters learned was a joinery and shop-fitting business.

It took around fifty firefighters up to two hours to bring the fire under control as thick smoke issued from the building.

The firefighters also worked to ensure that it didn’t spread to neighbouring premises. The industrial complex also contains a hot food store and a kitchen fittings business.

Police from Flemington Local Area Command also attended the fire.  They declared the building a crime scene and officers have been guarding the premises overnight.

“The cause of the fire is unknown,” NSW Police said in a statement.  “As inquiries continue, police are appealing for witnesses to contact police via Crime Stoppers.”

Both firefighters and police remain on the scene of the fire and specialist investigators are expected to visit the premises today.

Cosgrove Road was closed to traffic while the firefighting operation was underway but has since re-opened in time for morning peak hour traffic.
