Nearly 80 critical care patients had to be rushed out of a Perth hospital last night after a fire broke out.

Some of the patients were transferred to neighbouring hospitals after a fire started in an air-conditioning unit at St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital just after 6.45pm.

Some patients reportedly saw smoke and smelt burning rubber after the fire started, Perth Now reports.

Patients were transferred to St John of God Subiaco and St John of God Midland Public Hospitals.

The hospital, renowned for its maternity services, emptied four of its five floors during the fire but no one was injured.

The hospital said some services, including all surgery planned for today, have been cancelled.
