Fire destroys trailer of sugar cane mulch on Gold Coast roadside

A fierce fire fuelled by a truckload of sugar cane mulch has burned for three hours in a trailer at Pimpama, on the Gold Coast.

Fire crews were called to the scene at Pimpama Jacobs Well Road about 5.30pm, and were still dousing the blaze at 8.50pm, a Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman advised.

“The male driver escaped and separated the prime from the trailer,” she said.

Passing motorists were shocked by the intensity of the blaze.

“Oh, my gosh,” one woman exclaimed.

Crews remain at the scene due to the large amount of mulch on the back of the truck.

The fire is no longer affecting traffic, and no property is under threat.
