Petrol prices: Here’s when you should fill up if you want to save

Now is the time to fill up your car, with low petrol prices bringing families into the school holidays.

“Fill up now, there are some real bargains,” Peter Khoury, head of media at NRMA, told 9news.com.

Motorists in NSW can find the cheapest fuel prices on the Government fuel check site or the NRMA fuel check app.

Mr Khoury explained that a combination of a strong Australian dollar and low oil prices globally have resulted in very attractive petrol prices across Australia.

“The trend is positive,” he said.

“It’s the perfect formula you want for motorists in Australia.”

Mr Khoury said it is very difficult to forecast beyond one cycle, so motorists should fill up while prices are still low. 

“There’s no reason for prices to go up beyond the normal price cycle, but we’re currently towards the bottom of this cycle, and they will go back up,” he said.

The low prices come after the country saw its most expensive fuel quarter in two years.

The average price during the March quarter for unleaded fuel was 129.1, the highest since the September 2015 quarter, which sat 133.2.

Mr Khoury said global oil prices are falling because the member countries of OPEC last year announced they were going to cut production.

“The announcement meant we had a period of time where prices went up considerably,” he said.

“Now we have an oversupply which is bringing prices down.”
