Federation Square scrapped as World Cup live site after 'disappointing' fan behaviour

After fans stormed through barriers and set off flares during the Matildas' semi-final defeat to England on Wednesday night, Melbourne's Federation Square will no longer be a live site where supporters can watch the Women's World Cup.

Federation Square Management have confirmed they no longer can be a live site due to safety concerns.

On Wednesday, organisers announced the site had hit its 10,000 capacity an hour before the match against England began, but supporters pushed past security guards and stormed through barriers in an attempt to watch the action.

Police were seen rushing to help security teams as they attempted to stop the crowds.

"During the Women's World Cup Federation Square has hosted 140,000 people – and there have been many memorable scenes with thousands throwing their support behind the Matildas," Federation Square Management said in a statement.

"However, as a result of disappointing behaviour by a small group of people, Federation Square management has made the decision that there will no longer be a live site at Federation Square due to safety concerns.

"It is clear that if there was a repeat of last night's behaviour it would be unsafe for families, fans and staff."

The statement said the decision followed discussions this morning between event organisers and Victoria Police.

More than 50 flares were then discharged, with multiple thrown into the crowd, according to police.

"Luckily at this stage, we're not aware of anyone being injured," a police spokesperson said on Thursday morning.

Police have said "a large rowdy group of mainly male youths, part of the active supporter groups" were behind the flares.

The Melbourne live site will now be at AAMI Park.
