Federation Square has beaten out New York to top a list of the world's best public spaces.

Long the local spot to scream home the Socceroos and yell for Cadel Evans, Melbourne's meeting place is now an acknowledged world-leader.

Few spaces can boast the royal touch from Queen Elizabeth as well as a visit from talk-show Queen, Oprah.

The listing is welcome news for the original architect, Donald Bates.

"People like to be with other people and Federation Square allows that to happen," Mr Bates said.

In sixth, Fed Square topped New York's famed Times Square, and Tahrir Square in Egpyt.

Outdone by the Vatican, London's Trafalgar Square,  Red Square in Moscow and Iran's massive Imam Square in top spot.
