Federal officials nab drug smugglers

A Malaysian man and a woman from Hong Kong have been charged for their alleged role in smuggling more than three litres of liquid methamphetamine into Australia inside peach tins.

The pair were arrested this week after a joint investigation spearheaded by the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force officers.

The operation began early this month after an air mail consignment labelled as food arrived into the country from Hong Kong.

An examination of the tampered tins tested positive for methamphetamine.

A 21-year-old woman from Hong Kong allegedly tried to take possession of the package at a Granville residence on Thursday.

She was arrested and charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.

The woman was refused bail when she fronted court on Friday, and will remain in custody before reappearing on May 18.

A 22-year-old Malaysian man was arrested on Friday after attending the Granville residence and allegedly trying to access the consignment.

He has also been charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of methamphetamine, and is due to face court again on Wednesday after facing Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The two both face a maximum penalty of life behind bars if convicted of the offences.
