Federal government's response to Ebola

CASES OF EBOLA IN WEST AFRICA AS OF OCTOBER 31, 2014

* 13,500 clinical cases of Ebola have been detected.

* Almost 5000 people have died from the disease.

* The fatality rate has dropped from nearly one in two to one in three.

* 523 health workers have contracted the disease, according to the World Health Organisation.

* Of those, 269 people have died, signalling a fatality rate of more than one in two.

WHAT IS THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT DOING?

* Providing $20 million to staff a 100-bed Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone under the auspices of healthcare provider Aspen Medical.

* Another $2 million for training to countries such as East Timor and Papua New Guinea in dealing with Ebola.

* A further $2 million for Australian logisticians working with UN agencies such as the World Health Organisation in West Africa.

* The government has already committed $18 million to tackling the deadly disease.

HOW MANY AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS ARE ALREADY IN EBOLA-AFFECTED WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES?

* Between 20 to 30 Australian volunteers are working in the outbreak zone.
