Federal government puts spotlight on opera

Enter stage left for an operatic debut: the federal government.

Canberra has announced it will undertake its first national review of opera.

Designed in part to examine the "artistic vibrancy" of the highbrow entertainment, Arts Minister George Brandis wants to ensure audiences are enjoying high-quality performances.

The review will look at government funding of opera companies and the financial position of bodies including Opera Australia and state-based producers in Queensland, South Australia and West Australia.

"This is a timely opportunity to take a comprehensive look at this important art form," Mr Brandis said.

Helen Nugent, who chaired the 1999 Major Performing Arts Inquiry, will lead the National Opera Review, assisted by artistic director Moffatt Oxenbould and company manager Andrew McKinnon.

The review will call for public submissions and is expected to report back to government by early 2015.
