Attorney-General George Brandis loses diary battle in Federal Court

Federal Attorney-General George Brandis should give up on his "ridiculous" battle to prevent publication of his ministerial diary after losing another court appeal, his opposition counterpart has said.

The Federal Court today sided with shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, dismissing the appeal against access being granted to about eight months worth of entries in the top lawmaker's schedule of appointments.

"I welcome this decision from the full Federal Court of Australia. It's a victory for transparency and accountability," Mr Dreyfus said. 

It is unclear whether Senator Brandis will again appeal the decision, but Mr Dreyfus has insisted no more taxpayer money should be wasted on further challenges.

The protracted legal saga had already cost Australians more than $50,000 and wasted countless hours of legal practitioners' time, Mr Dreyfus said.

"I'd call on Senator Brandis to now say definitively that he will not be wasting further taxpayers' money by going onto the High Court of Australia," he said.

"Instead, he should expeditiously process this request, which was always a simple request."
