Fed govt supported coal mine: Adani chair

Adani chairman Gautam Adani maintains the company's Carmichael coal mine will create thousands of jobs for Queenslanders while helping to bring electricity to Indians living without power.

Mr Adani has made the comments in a Sky News interview recorded on the weekend, before Queensland's environment department signed off on a groundwater plan for the mine on Thursday.

This step will allow the company to begin constructing the mine, eight years after beginning the approvals process.

Despite the lengthy process to get to this point, Mr Adani maintains his company has had good support from the Australian government.

"From the federal government point of view, for the last eight years we are continuously getting good support, and we continuously followed the process of Australia, which is quite stringent compared to India," he said.

Mr Adani said if his company's investment in Australia is successful, more Indian businesses will be willing to invest in the nation.

He also maintains the project will deliver thousands of jobs for Queenslanders.

But it will also have benefits in India by helping bring power to 250 million of the country's 1.3 billion population living without it, he noted.

While Adani can now construct the mine, it still faces more state and federal hurdles before it can actually dig out the coal.

They include securing a licence to build and operate a rail line, and a royalties agreement with the state government.

The mine's opponents have vowed to continue fighting it.
