A faulty oven has delayed a Cairns to Sydney flight by more than 16 hours following an unscheduled landing in Rockhampton.

Jetstar flight JQ959, with 132 passengers on board, landed in the central Queensland city at 9pm on Sunday after fumes were smelt at the front of the Airbus A320 aircraft.

An airline spokeswoman said a faulty oven was the source of the problem and passengers boarded the same aircraft on Monday afternoon.

"They're just not going to use this oven," she told AAP.

The flight was meant to have arrived in Sydney shortly after 10pm on Sunday but now won't arrive until at least 3pm.
