Fate of the Furious on track to claim biggest opening weekend in cinema history

The latest instalment in the Fast and the Furious movie series is racing to smash the record for the highest-grossing movie opening weekend ever.

The Fate of the Furious is predicted to take in at least A$699 million world-wide during its first weekend in cinemas, Universal Pictures told CNN Money. 

The film, starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Charlize Theron, has already broken China’s recorded for the biggest opening day ever.

In the US, more than $60 million in ticket sales were recorded on the film’s opening day.

The predicted total gross for its global opening days would break the current record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, according to CNN.

All eight Fast and the Furious films, the first of which hit screens in 2001, have taken in an estimated revenue of $4,133,000,000.

The Fate of the Furious is now screening in Australian cinemas.
