A woman has been killed in a three-car collision in Tasmania's north.

Police say the 57-year-old died at the scene of the smash, on the Bass Highway at Rocky Cape, about 4.30pm on Sunday.

They say a west bound Toyota Echo sedan ran into the back of a Nissan Pulsar, causing the Echo to spin onto the wrong side of the road and rear-first into the path of a Toyota Hilux utility.

A seriously injured 64-year-old female passenger also in the rear of the Echo was taken to North West Regional Hospital at Burnie where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver and front seat passenger from the Echo, the five occupants of the Nissan and driver of the ute were all uninjured.

As a result of the crash the road was closed for five hours.
