Passenger in fatal pursuit to remain behind bars

A wanted woman arrested after the Sydney police chase that ended in a 17-month-old child being killed will remain behind bars.

Katie Tuite, who was the subject of six outstanding warrants, was allegedly found with drugs after police arrested her in Darlinghurst, in the inner city, last night.

The 22-year-old was a passenger in a stolen Audi involved in a police chase through Constitution Hill, in Sydney's west.

She faced charges of drug supply and possession but did not appear in Central Local Court today.

The case was adjourned to January 14, when Tuite is expected to make a bail application.

That prompted magistrate Jacqueline Milledge to remark: "Optimism is a wonderful thing."

The six outstanding warrants against Tuite included theft, affray and being armed with intent.

Tuite has not been charged in relation to the pursuit and the driver is still on the run.

The chase unfolded last night after police tried to stop the stolen car in Constitution Hill, near Parramatta, but it went down a residential street with a dead-end.

It's believed the stolen car crashed through a green backyard fence on Bessbrook Way where children were playing.

The 17-month-old girl, Tatalena Tauaifaga, was hit by a car and sustained critical injuries.

It's unclear at this stage which car hit the child, but police have launched a critical incident investigation.
