Police reveal ‘vehicle of interest’ in Mullumbimby cyclist hit-run

Police have released images of a “vehicle of interest” as they investigate the death of a 22-year-old cyclist in a hit and run on the NSW Far North Coast.

Tim Watkins was found on the side of Wilsons Creek Road at Wilsons Creek, 9km south-west of Mullumbimby just after 1am on Sunday June 23, by a passing motorist.

A bicycle was found near the body.

9News understands the young footballer had just left a friend's house, and was riding back to Mullimbimby, when he was hit by a car.

Police today released images of a late 1990s model Mitsubishi Delica L400 believed to have been involved in the collision and asked the driver to come forward.

"We understand that these things sometimes are accidents or mistakes but when you choose to deliberately drive away from the scene of such a collision then that mistake comes into question," Tweed Byron Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen said.

"This is not an incident where the driver would not know what has happened. They know what has happened and we do appeal to them to come forward to us, our investigation is progressing well, before we do come to them."

The vehicle is likely to have sustained significant damage in the collision. Police were able to identify the make and model by debris left at the scene.

Det Chief Insp Cullen said the family and wider community of the much-loved young victim wanted a resolution.

"Timothy is owed the respect of the person who is responsible to come forward and make up for what has actually happened.

"I would ask that person to come forward and release the pressure that is on them before we identify them and we do arrest them."
