A Sydney family of four has spoken of their narrow escape from their burning home, where 26 years of memories went up in smoke.

The Baloglah family managed to get free of the blaze in their split-level brick home in Leppington, in Sydney’s southwest, as firefighters swarmed the site.

Matthew Baloglah said there were already embers in the hallway when he heard an “explosion” that turned out to be from the electricity box.

“The skylight was sinking, like the glass was melting,” Linda Baloglah said.

“And Matt was like, ‘Lynn, we’ve got to get out’.”

The home was destroyed in minutes and firefighters took five hours to contain the blaze.

The case of the blaze is still unknown, but the Baloglah family is just thankful to have come through unhurt.
