Family of slain Queensland couple comes together to look after orphaned boy

The family of a couple stabbed to death in their Upper Coomera home has spoken out about their struggle to make sense of the horrific crime. 

Relatives from across the state have now joined forces to take care of the orphaned 5-year-old boy.

The family recalled happier times, when murdered mother Renee Carter and her husband Corey spent Christmas with their now-orphaned boy.

It is these memories his extended family hope that he'll keep forever.

"I think it's been really hard for him. He wants to know when his parents are coming home from the police station," said Renee's cousin Dan.

Dan's mother discovered the crime scene, finding the young boy waiting for his parents to "wake up".

"I don't think she can even handle it, she's completely shocked," Dan said.

One of Renee's closest friends took to Facebook to pay tribute: "I will really miss you Renee, having been your friend for 35 years."

As the family now works together in Logan to raise this young boy, new details have emerged about the man charged with killing both his parents. 

Renee's former partner Christopher Carter served his first tour in East Timor in 2000, when he was injured after an incident with an army grenade.

The 36-year-old also served in Iraq.

His former colleagues have told 9NEWS how the allegations have rattled the Queensland defence community.

The community help has overwhelmed the family.

"Clothes, blankets, toys for the little boy. Anything anyone can donate. It doesn't just have to be cash," friend Tracey Hill said.
