Families ‘shattered’ after multiple graves trashed in cemetery

Heartless vandals have snatched precious items and damaged several graves at a cemetery in Melbourne’s north.

The grave of Gary Clayton’s son was among a number of sites targeted by offenders at Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park, in Reservoir, yesterday.

“I was shattered. I couldn’t believe that someone would stoop so low as to vandalise someone’s resting place,” Mr Clayton told 9NEWS today.

“They just trashed it, broke into glass cabinets, took out personal items.”

Mr Clayton said while the offenders did not steal anything of great monetary value, the emotional trauma of the robbery has been significant.

“We’re grieving for my son. This adds to the grieving, and I feel for other families,” he said.

“It makes the grieving process that extra bit harder.”

Mr Clayton said that the security at the Sydney Road cemetery was “poor”.

“I could trash this place, and no-one would know…the gate is never locked.

“It shouldn’t be easy access.”
