A delicate rescue operation to save an injured rock climber after he fell halfway down a 200-metre cliff in the NSW Blue Mountains has been completed.

After spending the night awaiting rescue, the stricken climber, aged in his 50s, was winched from a rock ledge by a helicopter today.

He was stranded on the cliff face for more than 18 hours, and temperatures dropped to about 4C overnight.

The man has injuries to his lower legs and one of his arms after the fall.

He was stranded 100 metres down a 200-metre rock face.

Two rescue helicopters from NSW Ambulance and Polair worked to carry out the rescue in foggy conditions.

The man set out with two friends for a climb yesterday and walked an hour through the bush to reach the point where they would abseil from.

He fell about 20 metres, and one of his friends called for help.

Authorities received the call about 4.15pm yesterday, and it took them a number of hours to reach the injured man due to the remoteness of the location.

One of the friends stayed with the injured man overnight, as well as two police and two ambulance officers.
