Fairy Meadow: Man arrested after siege in Wollongong home ‘armed with knives’

A man has been arrested after a three-hour siege with police which saw him barricade himself inside a property in Wollongong.

Police were called to a residence in the suburb of Fairy Meadow on the Princes Highway at 9am following reports of a domestic dispute between a 23-year-old male and his sister.

The man had been threatening violence to police if they enter the property.

It was unknown if the man had a weapon, he claimed to be armed with several knives.

A tactical response group was on the scene and police negotiated with the man for some time.

Just before midday police discharged an electronic control device and the man was arrested.

He has been taken to Wollongong hospital for assessment.

The Princes Highway had been closed in both directions, but is now open in both directions.

Fairy Meadow Demonstration School, which is directly opposite the property, had been placed in lockdown.

“Due to a police situation in fairy meadow, the school is currently in lock down,” the school posted on Facebook.

“All students are safe. Please do not come to the school to pick up your child, as all gates are locked until further notice.”

The man has reportedly been taken to hospital in an ambulance which left the scene under police escort.
