Man hospitalised after disintegrating angle grinder explodes in his face

A man has been flown to hospital today after a hand-held angle grinder he was using exploded in his face.

Emergency paramedics responded to a call on Lendine Street, Barrack Heights on the NSW south coast around 12:30pm after a 52-year-old man was hit in the forehead by metal parts from the power tool, which had disintegrated, according to a NSW Ambulance spokesperson.

The man, who remained conscious while paramedics arrived, suffered facial lacerations and a suspected fractured skull.

9NEWS understands the man showed no signs of vision or cognitive loss following the explosion despite metal pieces becoming lodged in his forehead.

Inspector Norman Rees of NSW Ambulance, said: "This man has been extremely lucky - his injuries could have been much worse.

"The public need to understand that power tools can operate with tremendous force, which is why you need to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect vulnerable areas.

"This incident is an excellent illustration of why you need to protect those vulnerable areas - your eyes, your neck and your head with PPE."

The man was initially taken by road ambulance to Albion Park Airport where he was then airlifted to St George Hospital in a stable condition.
