Experts push for infrastructure reform

More needs to be done to get political opportunism out of infrastructure, experts say.

Infrastructure academics, industry leaders and politicians acknowledged an increase in transparency for large infrastructure projects, but said more needs to be changed to create a system that allocates projects based on need.

The Chairman of Infrastructure Australia joined academics in calling for non-market-sensitive sections of business cases to be released publicly as standard, the Australian Financial Review reports.

Sydney University academic Garry Bowditch also called for greater clarity around the roles of local, state and federal governments in infrastructure.

"We don't have sufficient boundaries. Its fuzzy, it's distorted and that's a recipe for political opportunism ... and a massive waste of money," he said.
