Ex-Skateboard champion under fire for daredevil stunt

A former Australian downhill skateboard champion has drawn the ire of police and motorists after he published a video online showing himself recklessly travelling down a NSW highway at speeds well over the legal limit.

Uploaded to Facebook on Monday, the video shows Mitch Thompson speeding so fast down a public highway that he crosses to the wrong side of the road to handle the tight bends.

Filmed in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, the sign-posted speed limit is 50km/h - which Mr Thompson is clearly exceeding.

He is being filmed by a friend following close behind, seemingly riding on his skateboard.

New South Wales Police have confirmed to A Current Affair that they are investigating the incident.

Acting Inspector Mick Timms says that while Mr Thompson's is obviously skilled in handling a high-speed skateboard, it doesn't mean he can do it on public roads.

"A couple of cars going the other way, they would have got a bit of a shock," he said.

"The internet is full of people who have succeeded in filming their own deaths. Regardless of how good you may be, you need to consider the fact that there are other road users present and there are risks."

Mr Thompson faces a potential $77 fine.
