Ex-Qld Bandidos chief spared jail term

A former president of a Queensland bikie gang who was nabbed with a pistol and stolen jet skis has walked free from a Cairns court.

Maxwell Patrick Geary, 50, the one-time leader of the Cairns chapter of the Bandidos, was handed a one-year suspended jail sentence when he faced the Cairns District Court on Tuesday.

He earlier pleaded guilty to possessing an unlawful weapon and receiving stolen property - two jet skis worth $14,500.

The court heard Geary had asked two fellow inmates to steal the jet skis from a Cairns property while he was serving time in Lotus Glen Prison on drugs charges in 2012.

Geary, a member of the Bandidos for 15 years, spent a month behind bars after he was arrested early last year.

He served as the gang's president in Cairns for a decade before leading the Mission Beach chapter.

His daughter Georgia told AAP in October that her father quit the gang over concerns he would be charged under the state's anti-bikie gang laws.

Geary says he now works in the banana industry employing backpackers to clean sheds and prune trees.
