Melbourne hospital evacuated after 'hoax bomb threat'

A hospital in Melbourne's east was fully evacuated this morning, causing chaos at the facility and on nearby train lines, after receiving a phoned in bomb threat.

At least 35 patients and staff at Epworth Hospital were evacuated just after 8.30am, Victoria Police said.

Authorities conducted a safety check of the facility and deemed it safe just after 10.15am, with the matter being treated as a hoax bomb threat.

Patients and staff were given the all clear to return to the building.

One patient was under an anesthetic and about to undergo surgery when the evacuation order was issued. The anesthetic was reversed and the patient was evacuated. 

Patients, many in wheelchairs, sat outside the hospital for nearly two hours waiting for Victoria Police to clear the property. 

During the threat, Victoria Police requested trains not stop at Hawthorn Station but service has since resumed.

Route 75 trams also diverted in both directions via Swan Street but has also returned to normal.

No arrests have been made.
