Enormous tree branch snaps, crushes Sydney woman's car

A large branch has snapped from its trunk and crushed a Sydney woman's car as she waited in traffic.

Joey Woo said she was very fortunate to escape injury when the large branch buckled and struck her black hatch back in the northern Sydney suburb of Willoughby last month.

In newly-released dashcam footage of the incident, electricity lights up the overcast sky as the branch pulls overhead wires down onto the car while a terrified Ms Woo sits inside.

"Firemen and police said I was extremely lucky," she wrote on Facebook.

"If I had been in motion or even stopped a tiny bit forward this could have turned out completely differently."

She posted dashcam footage of the incident to Willoughby City Council's Facebook page last week.

Ms Woo claimed the council should be liable for the damage to her car as the tree was rotted and not properly maintained.

"This video clearly shows it wasn't an act of god in that it wasn't struck by lightning nor wind when the incident occurred," she wrote.

"Rather as per the photos … the tree was in a poor state - black in parts and a bit hollow too."

Willoughby Council said it was in contact with Ms Woo's insurer, NRMA.

She claimed the council has denied liability.
