A Tigerair flight from Brisbane to Melbourne has been diverted to Sydney after crew identified an engineering issue.

The airline says the plane departed Brisbane at 9.50am (AEST) and landed in Sydney without incident just before midday.

"The captain took the appropriate action to divert to Sydney where the aircraft is undergoing an engineers' assessment," Tigerair said in a statement.

It is understood that the flight was diverted after concerns over potential fumes in the cabin, with emergency services standing by on the ground as a precautionary measure.

A statement from Tigerair said that, as the plane was undergoing an engineering review, it could not comment further on the incident.

Tiger has offered passengers free transfers to other flights.
