This week in politics: Energy prices to citizenship fiasco

It will be a busy week for politicians in Canberra. 9NEWS political reporter Kerrie Yaxley details what you need to know. 

Power policy

Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg will continue selling the National Energy Guarantee, which the government says will bring down power bills by $110 to $115 per year from 2020.

But Minister Frydenberg first needs to get the state and territory governments to agree. They'll meet next month.

Labor is likely to continue its attack which claims that the savings for households are too little too late.

Senate Estimates 

The Senate won't sit this week. Senators will instead be locked in Estimate Hearings, grilling public servants about a whole range of issues.

These hearings have the potential to cause governments grief.

High Court 

The High Court could hand down its decision on the fate of the "citizenship seven" this week.

Six Senators and one lower house MP - Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce - are waiting to learn whether they are found to have breached the constitution and are therefore ineligible to sit in Parliament.

Section 44 says you can't be a dual national and be elected to Parliament.

This could be very awkward for the government if Mr Joyce is sent packing. It would lose its one seat majority in the House of Representatives.

Even more awkward if the Deputy PM is given his marching orders while parliament is sitting.
