Prime Minister Tony Abbott says cleaning up union corruption is the government's priority when it comes to workplace reform.

"Our priority is to ensure we have honest unions and honest union officials," he said.

He said there was an "accumulating mountain of evidence" of union misconduct.

The government has anti-corruption laws currently before parliament and a royal commission is gearing up to start gathering evidence.

Mr Abbott said no one should get "over-excited" about a Productivity Commission review of the Fair Work Act, or laws to go to parliament next week to enact election promises on changes to the Act.

He said the implementation of election promises on IR would be done in a "orderly and timely fashion".
