Residents can return home after powerful bushfire at Londonderry is 'contained'

Firefighters have contained a powerful bushfire that ripped through grassland and threatened homes in Londonderry yesterday.

The fire burnt through nearly 400 hectares of bush around midday burning from The Northern Road across the Castlereagh Nature Reserve before moving to Llandilo Road.

The NSW Rural Fire Service said 55 properties came under threat during the fire, but were all left undamaged except for one shed.

Firefighters remained on the fireground overnight and said they continued to "strengthen containment lines" and "continued to mop up and black out."

Residents who live in the area have been advised it is safe to return to their homes.

The fire service said weather conditions are favourable today to assist them in keeping the situation under control.

During the efforts yesterday, a firefighter from the NSWRFS suffered a suspected broken collarbone after being hit by a falling tree branch.

The 24-year-old woman was among hundreds of firies who worked to contain the wild blaze.

She has since been released from Nepean Hospital and is said to be in good spirits.

Firies deployed several aircraft as they tackled the blaze, including the whopping water bomber "Thor".

The flames were fanned by average wind speeds of 30km/h, but gusts of up to 50km/h were detected in the area.

Yesterday’s fire is less than a kilometre from where a deliberately lit blaze broke out in Llandilo on November 4. A 16-year-old boy has been charged following the blaze that destroyed a home and damaged several properties.

Meanwhile, the bushfire that threatened homes in Lansdowne has also been brought under control.

A Watch and Act warning was downgraded after firefighters managed to contain the 15 hectare bushfire on Lucinda Avenue in Lansdowne.
