Southport siege over as gunman surrenders

The gunman besieged by police in a Gold Coast unit has surrendered and been taken into custody.

Queensland Police tweeted that the man had surrendered peacefully.

It appears he had been alone in the apartment on White Street in Southport, contrary to earlier police speculation.

Inspector Bruce Kuhn said the area was now safe and people could continue with their disrupted holiday.

Officers were called to a disturbance at an address on Anne Street where a gun had been fired about 11pm yesterday.

A man then retreated to a block of units on nearby White Street where he has remained, police say.

He fired another shot afterwards, believed to be intended as a warning.

"It sounded like the discharge of a firearm through the night from the block of units," Inspector Bruce Kuhn said at the scene.

Residents were evacuated from the complex while police negotiators and special emergency response team officers worked towards resolving the situation.

Police were uncertain whether the unit belonged to the man.

Insp Kuhn said he believed the situation was an isolated incident and had been successfully contained by police.

Buses and the light rail to the area were suspended and traffic was diverted during the siege.

Residents were told to stay indoors.
