Two men have been rescued in a delicate operation at Royal National Park, south of Sydney, after the pair became stuck on a ledge.

Huddled together, the pair were forced to wait while rescue crews devise a way to safely retrieve them both from the ledge 50m above the ocean.

The region is popular with walkers and tourists, however the unstable cliff where the men became stuck is fenced off.

Authorities suspect one of the men fell, and his friend tried to save him when they both became stuck.

The men were stuck on the ledge for more than two-and-a-half hours this afternoon.

The pair has been taken to St George Hospital, with one of the men suffering a suspected spinal injury sustained in the fall.
